artists local to the meanjin/greater brisbane area
after brisbane's iconic and revered live music venue, the zoo, announced it was closing, i saw an opportunity to gather songs from local artists, share them with listeners in the area, and create meaningful connections for artists and audiences alike. live and local music is important, and i hope that by showcasing up-and-coming artists, i can do my small part in keeping brisbane's music scene thriving.
"THE FINDS" functions as a form of socially engaged art where i was able to bring several artists together to collaborate and promote each other as apart of the same community.
the project is a constant work in progress as i continue to build both the community and the playlist itself. it features a variety of talent from both emerging and established musicians. with genres ranging from indie-folk tunes to grunge rock anthems; containing the likes of Serendipiti, Dublin Rose, ixaras, and more. for more information on playlist curation, or if you have a song to submit, email or message me.
the 'bardic inspirations' playlist serves as a collection of both my own music, and the music that inspires me to create. it features artists such as Adrianne Lenker, Big Thief, Alexandra Savior, and many more. it is through these songs, their words, their instruments, and their stories that i'm inspired to keep creating and sharing my own. i hope you enjoy them as i have.
nopey's songs and the songs that inspired them
in 2024, i gained experience as a recording engineer in live music environments, facilitated by my studies. through this, i aided in the operation of several live concerts at the Conservatorium, where i liaised with other engineers, sound mixers, concert convenors and performers. i learned and discussed how to best capture the performance's sound in the space, and executed upon organised plans regarding microphone use and placement in consideration to the space, instrument and reportoire.
as well as concerts, i also learned how to operate as an engineer in studio environments. because of this experience, i was able to act confidently when directing, setting up, tracking and mixing live studio sessions.
this role challenged me by taking me out of my comfort zone and forcing me to solve problems quickly, communicate and manage different personalities, and be knowledgeable with what i know.
along with music, i've also always been passionate about visual art. in 2022, i began to define a style and medium for myself, from designing cover art for music releases, and posting artworks for fun.
i enjoyed the challenge and simultaneous creativity i had when confining myself into pixel art with a limited set of striking colours. it is immediately recognisable as "nopey snoot" artwork.
the following artworks were made for fun, and were based off other media, such as movies or video games. i think it shows my creativity, as another means of creative expression. through these exercises, i also gained proficiency in adobe photoshop.
while studying at QUT, i worked as a teacher aide and music technology specialist at QACI. in this role i aided in class room activities, from teaching students music production or recording techniques, or as an in-house recording engineer for their studio sessions.
below are photos from the music showcase night 'under the stars' at QACI. i directed students throughout the school and coordinated the set up of instruments and microphones in the outdoor space to ensure the show ran successfully.
these are videos i've created, from film compositions to video demonstrations and interviews with musicians.
this was a composition i did in early 2023 as apart of my studies. i worked with my tutor, tom green, to hone in compositional elements, working on themes and motifs, and also for reaching my aesthetic goals. i wanted the song to sound gritty, grimy, and also appropriately sci-fi, as if it was apart of the world in which bladerunner exists.
a video demonstration for my pure data patch which made my piece "Reminisce 2600". this was another assessment item in my degree which saw me learn synthesis and how to synthesise from scratch. i learned the pure data software, and aimed to compose ambient music in the style of C418 using the synthesiser network i had coded.
this was an assessment piece which saw me interview established musicians in the industries i wanted to explore. toby hobart is an emerging artist, producer and creative, and kate freeman is a musician and music educator. i interviewed them and edited this together as a video essay of my findings and how i can take on their knowledge for myself.
